Celebrating Differences During Limb Difference Awareness Month

April is Limb Difference Awareness Month—a time to help young children learn about inclusion, empathy, and celebrating differences. In early childhood education, these conversations are especially important. Young children naturally notice differences, and guiding them with age-appropriate stories, discussions, and classroom experiences helps them practice compassion, ask respectful questions, and appreciate what makes each person unique. Early lessons in empathy and inclusion build confidence, support social-emotional growth, and create classrooms where every child feels seen, valued, and included.

Doodle Bugs! is proud to partner with Limb Love Library, an organization dedicated to empowering children through inclusive literature. By donating books and providing educational resources, they help spark awareness, normalize differences, and foster empathy in schools and libraries across the country.

Ashley Schreiber and Heather Fischer started Limb Love Library because their daughters were both born with limb differences. Ashley explained, “we knew that once they reached school age, other kids would naturally be curious, and we want kids to ask questions. Our hope is that children learn to see differences, not with hesitation or fear, but with acceptance and respect. We realized that books are such a powerful way to start those conversations.”

This year, we are excited to read Curious and Kind by Heather Fisher, which introduces children to limb differences in a thoughtful, age-appropriate way. The book encourages curiosity while reinforcing kindness and acceptance, opening the door to meaningful classroom conversations. Heather adds, “stories have a powerful way of shaping empathy. When children read about characters with limb differences who are confident, capable, and joyful, it helps break down misconceptions and encourages acceptance. Our hope is that these books spark conversations in classrooms and homes that lead to greater understanding, kindness, and inclusion.”

Limb Love Library promotes inclusivity and helps children and adults see that differences are what makes us all unique and special. This mission aligns beautifully with the community we nurture here at Doodle Bugs!—where all children feel understood, celebrated and included.
